Marcus Garvey was born in August 17, 1887 in St. Ann’s Bay, Jamaica. Garvey is known for his creation of the United Negro Improvement Association. Garvey’s intent was to use this program to ensure that African American descendants would be come knowledgeable of their origins and potentially return to Africa. Garvey who was originally born in Jamaica, began this purpose in Jamaica after successfully creating the program he relocated to the United States. His relocation was to ensure that he would raise enough revenue to keep this program afloat.
While in the United States, he resided in Harlem. During his time in Harlem, he would be publishing the Negro Weekly. This paper was used to teach African Americans there history and how to grow. While in Harlem, his organization began to get a lot of traction and they held their first meeting in the Madison Square Garden. In addition to this, Garvey opened the Black Star Line which was a black importing business. Garvey began to become a rival of FBI Director J. Hoover. Hoover went as far as to hiring the first African American FBI Agent just for him to implement the UNIA to see what was their setup. Garvey was arrested due to mail fraud , after serving his time, he was deported back to Jamaica. He would later re-locate to London, however his presence just wasn’t as strong as it was in the States. Garvey passed away on June 10, 1940 in London.
